What’s In Season For The Month Of May?

It’s starting to heat up in Scottsdale! May always marks the rise of high temperatures and luckily – the ripening of some of my favorite produce. Blackberries, arugula and tomatoes are all abundant and delicious this time of year. Let’s discuss where to buy and the best ways to use all three of these:

Singh Meadows has some of the freshest locally-grown produce in the Valley. Our chefs love sourcing farm-to-table meals from this quaint and bountiful farm. The Farm at South Mountain also provides organically-grown lush fruits and vegetables to Phoenix/Scottsdale residents. If you have some free time, I urge you to visit these farms! It’s wonderful to see exactly how your food is grown and where it’s coming from.

Here at Ripe Personal Chef, we aim to create the freshest dishes possible. Some of our favorite things to cook in May are:

Toasted Flatbread with Tomatoes, Mozzarella and Basil - It’s crazy how something so simple can taste so delicious. This dish is an excellent example of why it’s important to use fresh, high-quality ingredients in recipes.

Arugula Salad with Caramelized Onions, Fennel, Oranges and Rice Wine Vinaigrette - This is one of my absolute favorite salads that we serve. The sweetness of the carmelized onions married with the peppery bite of the arugula is to die for.

Berry Crumble with Homemade Whipped Cream - The sweetness of in-season berries is impeccable this time of year. Our crumble showcases this with a hearty crumble and a light, fresh whipped cream.

In-season produce is unmatchable in flavor. Try basing your grocery list off of this handy chart. You’ll be surprised at how different a tomato tastes in May than it does in December. Stay happy and stay ripe!
